Office S&M elevate the everyday. We are an architecture practice that works with a 50:50 split of public clients and private clients on individual homes, new build housing, workspace retrofit and public realm projects.

Established by Catrina Stewart and Hugh McEwen in 2013, Office S&M is an award-winning east London architecture practice. With a diverse portfolio, Office S&M has gained recognition for its inventive inquiry, participatory practice, collaboration, and experimentation with materials and colour to create drama. Residential projects in London include Valetta House (2017), Janus House (2018), Overcast House (2020), Mo-tel House (2020) and Salmen House (2017), an example of the practice’s work on small brownfield sites. Current multi-unit housing schemes include: Chipstead Mews and Chipstead Way, Croydon; Goldsmith Mews, Kent; and Red Cow Terrace, Hertfordshire.

Office S&M has extensive experience in town centre and placemaking projects, gained through involvement in every round of the GLA Outer London Fund, and working with one-third of the London boroughs, including four projects for Newham Council. Current civic work includes Pride in the High Road, Haringey; The Green Room and Cafe, Newham; and Nag’s Head Market, Islington, which incorporate the practice’s co-design process to build local capacity.

Office S&M’s accolades include winning Building Design’s Young Architect of the Year Award (2020); inclusion in the Architects’ Journal 40 under 40 – a showcase of architecture’s brightest up-and-coming talent (2020) and the Architecture Foundation’s New Architects 4 publication (2021); and selection as a Rising Star by RIBA Journal (2019). The partners sit on the Hackney Design Review Panel, Newham Design Review Panel, Design Council Expert Panel, and Essex Quality Review Panel.

‘Office S&M is certainly one to watch.’
