Office S&M enhance the everyday. Our architecture practice works with a 50:50 split of public and private clients on individual homes, new-build housing, workspace retrofit and public realm projects.

Co-founded by Catrina Stewart and Hugh McEwen in 2013, Office S&M is an award-winning architecture practice with a varied portfolio. The studio has gained recognition for its inventive approach, participatory practice, collaboration, and experimentation with materials and colour to create drama.

The practice is founded on a belief that good design should deliver social value while providing joy and supporting wellbeing. This applies to the places people live, work, shop and just spend time together. Projects range from eye-catching houses to playful public realm, all of which is underpinned by detailed research and an understanding of regulatory processes. The secret to all of this is listening to clients and communities, forming a deeper awareness of needs and aspirations that leads to solutions.

Office S&M has developed extensive experience in town centre and placemaking projects, gained through involvement in every round of the GLA Outer London Fund, and working with one-third of the London boroughs. Civic work includes high streets, community centres and markets, incorporating the practice’s co-design process to build local capacity.

The practice’s accolades include: winning Building Design’s Young Architect of the Year Award (2020); inclusion in the Architects’ Journal 40 under 40 – a showcase of architecture’s brightest up-and-coming talent (2020) and the Architecture Foundation’s New Architects 4 publication (2021); and selection as a Rising Star by RIBA Journal (2019). The directors sit on the Hackney Design Review Panel, Tower Hamlets Quality Review Panel, Newham Design Review Panel, Design Council Expert Panel, Croydon Design Review Panel and Essex Quality Review Panel.

‘Office S&M is certainly one to watch.’

Catrina co-founded Office S&M with Hugh McEwen in 2013. She specialises in community engagement and co-design, which fits perfectly with her passion for public and educational projects. Her award-winning residential, workspace and retail projects are always created with ethical materials and sustainable methods; she combines this design prowess with a sound knowledge of planning and regulatory standards to deliver buildings on sensitive sites.

Catrina’s work on the BAFTA-recognised, handmade computer game Lumino City, and in the family toymaking business, are a testament to her inventiveness and sense of joy in the design process.

As a recognised leader in her field, Catrina has been appointed to the Hackney Design Review Panel, the Tower Hamlets Quality Review Panel, the Haringey Quality Review Panel and as a Design Council Expert where she advises local authorities on the values and benefits of good design. She has lectured internationally including, the Royal Academy of Arts, the V&A, UCL and Cambridge University.

Hugh McEwen
Hugh co-founded Office S&M with Catrina Stewart in 2013. Prior to this he worked for a number of architectural practices that specialise in housing, where he honed his skills in the sector. He brings this experience to Office S&M, where he has delivered a number of widely-published homes and has more recently led on multi-home schemes in London and Kent.

Hugh’s role includes leading on collaboration and contacts with architectural teams; overseeing compliance and best practice in housing design; and providing policy advice on infill housing around London. He also works on projects and engagement that cross between private and public realms, such as high street regeneration and market renovations.

He has written for Building Design, Blueprint, and the Architectural Review, and his drawings have been exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Show. Hugh’s expertise has led to his selection for the Croydon Design Review Panel, the Essex Quality Review Panel, and he was named as a winner of the 2019 RIBA Journal Rising Stars for his work at Office S&M Architects.

Team

Andreas Diakomanolis
Architect

Andreas received his Part III from the University of Cambridge, and his masters from London Metropolitan University. He is interested in the social knowledge contained within buildings and, because of this, their ability to positively impact on the people who use them.

Before joining Office S&M, Andreas worked at Conran and Partners on a large regeneration scheme to repair the northern end of Portobello Road with a new public square. Andreas is now delivering a number of housing schemes at Office S&M, including Goldsmiths Mews in Kent.

Malin Bergman
Architect

Malin completed her Masters and qualified as an architect at the KTH School of Architecture, and she is passionate about making, architectural care, and storytelling. Malin’s academic work exploring urban narratives of care has recently been published in “Infrastructural Love: Caring for Our Architectural Support Systems”.

Prior to starting at Office S&M, Malin worked at practices in London and Stockholm across a range of residential, workspace, and research projects. At Office S&M, she leads the design development of residential refurbishments, nursery fit outs, and town centre strategies across the capital.

Kyle McGuire
Architect

Kyle studied at the Mackintosh School of Architecture and before this, gained a degree in Architectural Technology at the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture. Kyle likes to investigate the experiential qualities of architecture and its dialogue with the character of a place.

Kyle previously worked at Sam Jacob Studio, where he delivered the Beano Exhibition at Somerset House. At Office S&M, Kyle is leading a series of residential retrofit projects, including the significant refurbishment of a mews house in Hackney that investigates light and opacity.
