Brick Lane Masterplan

The Spitalfields and Banglatown Masterplan is a framework designed to guide development in one of London’s most vibrant and historic areas. The plan seeks to balance the demands of economic growth, residential development, and cultural preservation within a rapidly evolving urban landscape.

Commissioned by London Borough of Tower Hamlets, the masterplan was created with input from a multidisciplinary team of urban planners, architects, and heritage experts. We worked collaboratively with the council, Metropolitan Workshop, and stakeholders to develop the site boundary, vision, and outcomes of the masterplan.  Its goal is to address critical challenges in the area, including rising property prices, loss of public spaces, and the need to support diverse communities and businesses.

The masterplan addresses these issues by introducing measures to enhance affordable housing, improve green spaces, and safeguard the area’s cultural identity. It also prioritises sustainable development and ensures that the needs of both local residents and businesses are met in a way that supports long-term growth.

Public engagement was central to the project, with extensive consultations to gather input from residents, businesses, and community groups. The wider engagement was carried out by Muf, Daisy Froud, Shahed Saleem, and ourselves through a series of in-person discussions, meetings, and workshops with the diverse residents of the local wards. This collaborative approach ensured the plan reflected local priorities and created a shared vision for the future of Spitalfields and Banglatown.
