Murano House
Murano House is a deep retrofit and extension of a victorian property in North London, where the clients aimed to transform their home into a
modern, sustainable space that reflected their passion for art and collection of Murano glass sculptures. The clients had a particular interest in
incorporating these vibrant, artistic elements into the renovation.
The brief centered around creating an expansive, light-filled kitchen that would serve as the heart of the home. This space needed to embrace natural materials and provide an inviting environment for cooking and entertaining. The clients also expressed a desire to reinstate a stained glass window at the front of the property, a nod to the house’s Victorian heritage, while allowing the rear extension to showcase a more contemporary aesthetic.
In response, we developed a design that celebrated light, color, and
texture. The rear façade became a playful collage of stained, back-painted, and
translucent glass, inspired by the hues of the client’s Murano glass
collection. These panels, ranging from deep greens to soft, sunlit yellows,
create a dynamic interplay of light throughout the day. The effect is both
calming and visually striking, imbuing the kitchen with a sense of artistry and
warmth.
Inside, natural materials take center stage. Timber beams frame the space, while wood fiber insulation and natural lime plaster ensure the interior is breathable and energy-efficient. The green roof, alongside triple-glazed windows and an air-source heat pump (ASHP), enhances the home's environmental performance. These sustainable features were carefully integrated without compromising the aesthetic, allowing the design to feel both modern and timeless.
